Surgery can have two different focuses depending on your individual cancer: to try and conserve the breast tissue such as a lumpectomy (removal of the lump within the breast) or a mastectomy (removal of the entire breast). To find out if the breast cancer has spread to lymph nodes in your underarm and stage (extent) of your cancer, one or more of these lymph nodes will be removed and looked at under the microscope. They may be removed either as part of your breast cancer surgery or as a separate operation.1
Chemotherapy involves the use of anti-cancer drugs which are taken orally (by mouth) or injected into the body.
Hormone therapy targets cancer cells within the body through interfering with normal female hormones.2 Hormone therapy may not be suitable for everyone, depending on cancer stage and your individual situation.2
