Biography

Prof Kailash Narayan is an experienced radiation oncologist consulting at Icon Cancer Centre Freemasons, bringing over 34 years’ experience in the diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological cancers. Following completion of his medical training in 1973 and a post graduate degree (MD) in biophysics from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, he obtained a PhD in experimental pathology at John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University in 1981. Prof Narayan commenced specialist radiation oncology training at Auckland Hospital in 1982, before joining Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (PMCC) in 1984.

In 1987, Prof Narayan became a head & neck cancer consultant at PMCC before being appointed as Head of Radiation Gynaecology Oncology (1996-2019). During this role, he designed and maintained a clinical database of peer reviewed publications investigating treatment outcomes of gynaecological cancers. These clinical observations, in collaboration with medical and gynaecological oncologists, helped the formulation of uniform treatment policies of gynaecological cancers in Victoria. The studies also became the basis of several clinical studies, including a very successful international study for the treatment of cervix cancer.

Prof Narayan maintains a strong interest in education, research and clinical trials, actively engaging in medical education and mentorship of radiation oncology trainees and regularly reviewing scientific papers for national and international medical journals. In 2003, he was appointed as clinical Associate Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Melbourne before appointment as Professor in 2017.

Prof Narayan is dedicated to providing the highest level of care to his patients and is actively involved in key studies and trials investigating radiation therapy treatments for gynaecological cancers. Along with clinical, radiology and molecular imaging colleagues, he has investigated the use of MRI and PET in staging and treatment of gynaecological cancers, leading to numerous publications in international journals describing the improved results. Prof Narayan has pioneered and developed image-based ultrasound guided conformal brachytherapy of cervical cancer in collaboration with the brachytherapy team at PMCC, resulting in better tumour
